Entry Criteria

Entry Criteria refers to a set of predefined conditions or requirements that must be met before a testing phase can begin in the software development lifecycle. These criteria ensure that the testing process starts under the right conditions, with all necessary prerequisites in place to ensure effective and meaningful testing. Entry criteria are essential for ensuring that the system, the testing environment, and all relevant artifacts are ready for testing to proceed, minimizing the risk of ineffective or incomplete testing.

Common Entry Criteria for Different Testing Phases

  1. Unit Testing:
    • Code for the module or unit is developed and compiled.
    • The test environment is set up with the necessary tools and configurations.
    • Test cases for the unit are written and reviewed.
  2. Integration Testing:
    • Individual units or components have passed unit testing.
    • Integration points between components are clearly defined.
    • Necessary integration test cases are written and ready.
    • A test environment that includes the necessary dependencies (e.g., databases, external APIs) is available.
  3. System Testing:
    • All integrated components are deployed in a test environment.
    • Test data is prepared and available.
    • The system is stable enough to begin comprehensive testing.
    • Functional and non-functional requirements are defined and documented.
  4. Acceptance Testing:
    • The system meets the defined requirements or has passed system testing.
    • The test environment mirrors the production environment.
    • The end-user documentation is ready.
    • The test team is prepared with the acceptance criteria and test cases.
    • The client or stakeholders are ready to perform testing.

Common Entry Criteria Elements

The specific entry criteria can vary depending on the type of testing being performed, but they typically include some or all of the following:

  • Test Plan Approval: A finalized test plan that defines the scope, objectives, resources, schedule, and methodologies for the testing process.
  • Test Environment Setup: The environment where testing will occur is configured, including hardware, software, and network configurations. This setup ensures the system behaves similarly to the production environment.
  • Test Data Availability: Data needed for testing (including input data and expected results) is prepared and available.
  • Stable Build: The software build is stable enough to begin testing, meaning that major bugs or issues have been addressed by the development team.
  • Requirement Completeness: All relevant requirements, whether functional or non-functional, are clearly defined, documented, and understood by the testing team.
  • Test Case Development: Test cases, scripts, and scenarios are written and reviewed for completeness, accuracy, and relevance.
  • Dependencies in Place: Any external dependencies (such as third-party services, APIs, or hardware components) required for testing are set up and functioning.
  • Resource Availability: The required personnel, tools, and other resources are available and ready to perform the testing activities.
